Making a carved candle - step by step

I really like making carved candles, as it is not only a fun creative activity, but also gives me the opportunity to realize my own ideas. I will also show you how I make a carved candle step by step, from pouring the candle, dipping it and finally carving it.
1. Casting the base candle
The first step is to make the base of the candle. For this, we need paraffin, wicks and a mold. We melt the wax over steam, making sure that it does not burn. We thread the wick into the mold, pull the wick tight with a wick clamp. I usually tie it to a stick. It is important that the wick is in the center. Let the candle harden completely, which usually takes 3-4 hours. Since the physical property of paraffin is that it shrinks, the solidified wax must be pierced and refilled with paraffin so that the center of the candle is not airy and burns beautifully when lit.
2. Dipping
After the base candle has solidified, dipping follows, which gives us the opportunity to first color our beautiful candle. Prepare waxes of different colors and melt them separately. There are very good machines available for this, which heat the wax in water vapor and set the paraffin to the appropriate temperature, which is a very important part of dipping. We can dip about 20-25 or even 30 layers onto the candle, depending on the size. During dipping, make sure that the layers are applied neatly one above the other to achieve the desired color shade. Between layers, dip the candle in room temperature water and wipe off any water droplets. If you don't use a water bath, you can let it air-dry for a bit, but that's a longer process. The water droplets, however, need to be soaked up with a paper towel, otherwise the next layer of wax will be bubbly.
3. Carving
The final step of the candle is carving. After dipping the candle to the desired color and thickness, you can start creating the desired patterns with a sharp knife or candle-shaping tool. Be careful not to cut too deeply into the candle, as this will ruin the appearance and functionality of the candle. You should always pay attention to detail when carving; choose patterns that complement the color of the candle you have chosen.
