Comparison of C6 and Golden Wax 464
Posted in: Candle making
When I started making candles, one of the biggest challenges was finding the perfect wax for me. One of the most popular soy waxes was C3, no question, it was the best-selling on the market, everyone used it, I thought I couldn't go wrong with it. After that, different brands of wax started to appear on the market. I always looked at which one was good for what, because what's good for a glass scented candle isn't good for a wick. I always researched the topic thoroughly to see how each wax behaved. Now, in the second half of 2024, C6 wax, which is a mixed wax, started to become popular, or new to me. I already had experience with the C3 and Golden wax I used until then, but as a candlemaker, experimentation is continuous with new materials. Now I have collected them, the manufacturer's description and my own experiences and summarized them in this way.
C6:
1. Composition and properties: C6 soy wax is a coconut-soy wax blend specifically designed for brick-shaped candles. This combination provides a creamier texture and leaves a nicer, smoother surface on the top of the candles. It does not require much post-processing if you follow the manufacturer's instructions.
2. Fragrance casting: C6 wax has fantastic fragrance diffusion capabilities. It binds fragrances extremely effectively, so the scent can be felt strongly and clearly both cold and warm. In this wax, the fragrance oil is added to the wax in a ratio of 6% (of course, here too, we should consider the recommendation of the fragrance oil manufacturer!)
3. Casting temperature and process: C6 wax can be cast optimally between 65-70 °C and sets relatively quickly. However, it is worth paying attention to the temperature of the wax, as it can be prone to surface cracking at too high a temperature.
4. Advantages: Excellent fragrance diffusion. Smooth, creamy surface. Sustainable, as it is made from environmentally friendly raw materials.
5. Disadvantages: More sensitive to temperature, which complicates the work process. Higher price than some other waxes.
Godlen Wax 464:
1. Composition and properties: Golden Wax 464 is a product made with pure soy wax, to which a small amount of vegetable additives is added to improve its pourability and surface smoothness. This wax is extremely popular for making container candles.
2. Fragrance release: Golden Wax 464 also has excellent fragrance release, although sometimes C6 wax retains intense fragrances better. However, 464 wax can also be strongly felt, especially with the right additives and essential oils.
3. Pouring temperature and process: 464 is usually poured at 60-65 °C and cures slightly slower than C6. However, it is less prone to surface defects such as cracking or shrinkage.
4. Pros: It is easy to work with, less sensitive to temperature. More affordable than C6. It produces candles with a nice, even finish.
5. Cons: The fragrance can sometimes be weaker than C6 and tends to stay soft in warmer environments.
In conclusion
If you are looking for a strong fragrance and a smooth, elegant finish, C6 soy wax may be the best choice. However, if you are looking for an easy-to-use, reliable wax that is more affordable, Golden Wax 464 is the winner.
Both waxes are great materials for candle making, the only question is which one suits your style and expectations better!
